Back in 2003, a group of us participated in an event called Slugfest. For $40 you would get a bleacher ticket to a Red Sox game and admission into a bar before the game. At this bar we were promised free cover, free food and drink specials. When we got there, there was no cover (because we met up at the bar at 11:00 in the morning) no drink specials, and a cheap appetizer buffet. We eventually left the bar and went to hang out at Dorn's place. Later on, we went to the game and sat in our $18.00 seats for which we had paid $40.
After getting ripped off, a couple of us started discussing starting our own annual event. We decided that it should be a day for everyone to get together, have a few beers, and watch our beloved Red Sox. In 2004 we bought 40 bleacher tickets, all in a block. We sold them for face value. Forty of us bar crawled our way from Southie to Fenway for the game. There are plenty of stories of drunken debauchery and injuries going to and from the game.
2005 was a bigger year for us. We bought 75 tickets. Both years saw a significant amount of people who wanted tickets, but there just weren't enough for everyone.
The group was the same size for 2006, but everyone received red t-shirts with the Boomerfest logo. It helped to promote the event. Unfortunately, it also helped the bouncers at Boston Billiards figure out who should be kicked out of the bar after the game.
2007 was the biggest year yet. 100 people joined the party. We even had a celebrity in our midst for a while. But a ticket mix up caused LB, from the Bruins and WAAF, and his wife to have to miss the game. Too bad, because we got to see Clay Buchholz, in his second Major League start, throw a No-Hitter against the Orioles. A special night all around.
At one point this event was called Red Sox Reunion. Unfortunately, the Red Sox contact and shut down any websites that use the term "redsox" in the website name. To avoid this problem, we ended up going with the name that most people already called it, Boomerfest.
